Burda Style 09/2016#125

Those of you who follow me on social media already knows the my head practically exploded when I saw this new pattern in the Burda Style shop. Long Sleeve Scuba Dress 09/2016 #125 is the full title. It screamed my name and I immediately made two. Plus I have fabric piles on my sewing room floor waiting to be cut into more. This is my second one. The first one is in the very end of this post since I only managed to get one usable photo of it, ha.

And the pattern did not disappoint. It is such a fun sew and the fit is spot on. It's one of those styles where you look fabulous but you also feel crazy comfortable. And different kind of fabrics can dress it up or down. This is a bit of a 'relaxed party' version and the first one I made is a perfect everyday version.

I eliminated both the center front and back seams simply because I think they are unnecessary and I just cut my pieces to fold instead. Since you add your seam allowance yourself on Burda Style patterns, it's the easiest 'fix' in the world.

I skipped the invisible zipper in the back. My fabric did not have a ton of stretch but it does have some and I had no problems getting it on. But it obviously all depends on your fabric choice. So if you need an invisible zipper, then you obviously can't skip the center back seam.

My fabric choices were a stable and quite thick French Terry (perfect for this project) and a metallic laminated French Terry for the contrast stripes, that quite frankly turned out to be a bit of a disaster. It was $25/yard at Mood Fabrics so I expected it to be okay quality and it looks SO amazing. But as soon as I started sewing it, the thin metallic layer started cracking up and the cream colored French terry peeks through. You can barely see it in these photos (unless you know where to look) but it is quite visible in real life and it annoys me because the dress looks old and worn out (in the not good way) instead of brand new. Ugh. If it gets worse I might replace all the metallic fabric. The black fabric is simply too good quality to not be used a lot. Sounds like a in-front-of-the-tv or waiting-in-school-carpool-line job, ha. But I will enjoy the metallic as long as it lasts.

I finished the neckline with a classic knit rib and my coverstitch took care of the hemming of the dress and the sleeves.

And here is my first version made with French terry (a bit thinner than the black) and a quilted knit for the stripes. You can call this my wearable muslin and I made it as simple as I could, so I used the plain sleeve pattern piece instead of the color blocked/pieced one. But as you can see it fit right off the bat. I'm going to wear it with skinny jeans and a cardigan all fall and winter long and like this in the spring and summer.

Now I want to make the sweatshirt with the turtleneck that also comes with this pattern.

Thank you!

  1. such pretty dresses, I really like them both. How annoying that the metallic fabric did that! And it's not like it's cheap!

  3. They look absolutely awesome - such a shame about the metallic terry. I'd say it's definitely worth a re-make if you can find a better quality replacement.

  4. It is a shame the golden French terry didn't work how you would like. I think the dress style looks gorgeous on you and I absolutely love the detail on the chest area. Fantastic job.

  10. These are great! Contact Mood, see if they can give you a refund, even if a partial one. That's not good quality they should stand by, I think.
